The Power of Educating Our Community of Visually Impaired Students
Educational institutions with the mission to make education accessible to all, have an amazing opportunity to positively change the lives of millions of visually impaired people and families by offering their curriculum in braille format.
Braillo’s mission is to work with institutions like yours to bring more visually impaired people into the world of education, employment and financial independence.
If you’re institution is considering opening your programs to the visually impaired it’s important to understand these two factors:
1) There are Government requirements for materials that must be in braille.
In the United States, the regulating authority is the Braille Authority of North America (BANA).
Other pertinent regulations are the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehab Act of 1973 and Title (II) of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
2) There are Government Standards – Braille Height / Formatting
In the United States, these are contained in Specification 800, “Braille Books and Pamphlets,” from the National Library Service for the Blind (NLS).
Governments have precise standards for the dot’s height, size, shape, horizontal and vertical placement to ensure the highest quality, legible braille.
